Infinity Ward has responded to growing claims that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 includes an AI chatbot, saying players have misunderstood what the new Gunny feature actually does.
The discussion started after Call of Duty insider TheGhostOfHope described Gunny as an AI-powered assistant. Infinity Ward quickly pushed back, explaining that the feature isn’t powered by generative AI and was instead created directly by the studio’s developers.
Gunny Is a Loadout Assistant
According to Infinity Ward, Gunny is designed to help players create weapon builds using attachments they’ve already unlocked. Rather than acting like a chatbot, the assistant simply recommends loadouts based on a player’s preferred playstyle and available equipment.
The goal is to make switching between multiplayer matches faster without spending several minutes adjusting attachments in the Gunsmith menu.
Developers emphasized that Gunny doesn’t generate conversations or create content. Instead, it’s a handcrafted gameplay feature focused entirely on weapon customization.
AI Remains a Sensitive Topic
The confusion comes after Activision’s previous use of generative AI in parts of the Call of Duty franchise. The publisher previously confirmed that AI-assisted tools had been used during the creation of certain in-game assets, leading many fans to assume Gunny relied on similar technology.
Infinity Ward insists that’s not the case, stressing that the assistant was built by developers rather than an AI system.
Final Thoughts
Whether Gunny becomes a popular quality-of-life feature remains to be seen, but Infinity Ward wants players to understand one thing before launch: it’s a loadout recommendation tool—not an AI chatbot.
