Hasbro is expanding the 40th-anniversary celebration of The Transformers: The Movie with more than a restored theatrical presentation.
The influential 1986 animated film will return to cinemas beginning September 17, 2026, presented in remastered 4K. Audiences who remain after the credits will also see a completely new cinematic chapter created specifically for the anniversary event.
The additional footage was announced during San Diego Comic-Con, where Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment offered the first preview of the previously unseen material. The companies have not yet revealed the new chapter’s title, running time or complete story details.
The Story Will Continue After the Credits
Unlike a conventional anniversary screening, the upcoming theatrical release will add new material to the original film.
Hasbro describes the post-credits sequence as an entirely new chapter in the wider Transformers story. It will be shown exclusively as part of the cinema event, giving longtime fans their first piece of new narrative content attached directly to the film in four decades.
The announcement uses the message, “As this journey ends, a new one begins,” suggesting that the scene may introduce another adventure rather than simply function as a retrospective bonus.
However, Hasbro has not confirmed which characters will appear, when the chapter takes place or whether it connects to an upcoming animated production. Until more information is released, its larger importance to the franchise remains unknown.
Remastered 4K and 4DX Presentations Planned
The anniversary version has been restored in 4K for its return to the big screen.
Selected cinemas in the United States and United Kingdom will also offer the film in 4DX, a premium format that adds synchronized seat movement and environmental effects to the presentation. Standard 4K screenings will be offered more widely through participating theaters.
The U.S. theatrical engagement is expected to run from September 17 through September 21, beginning on the date officially celebrated as Transformers Day. International schedules and participating theaters may differ by territory.

Tickets Go on Sale in August
Tickets for the 40th-anniversary screenings will become available on August 7, 2026, through participating theater box offices and online ticketing services.
Theater locations remain subject to change, so availability will depend on the region and local cinema operator. Participating U.S. theaters will also sell collectible concession merchandise, including themed popcorn containers and drinkware, while supplies last.
The new post-credits chapter is currently described as exclusive to the theatrical event. Hasbro has not announced whether it will later appear on streaming services, television or a new home-video edition.
Hasbro Continues Its “Apology Tour”
The screenings form part of Hasbro’s year-long The Transformers: The Movie Apology Tour, a deliberately humorous campaign centered on the emotional impact the film had on younger viewers.
The original movie became infamous for killing several established characters, most notably Optimus Prime. Hasbro’s campaign treats the anniversary as an opportunity to acknowledge that decades-old childhood trauma while celebrating the film’s continuing popularity.
Fathom Entertainment’s promotional description invites audiences to return to the “scene of the crime,” while emphasizing that the anniversary presentation will not alter the original story.
The new chapter therefore should not be interpreted as a replacement ending or a rewrite of Optimus Prime’s fate. It is additional material placed after the existing credits.
A Film That Changed the Original Series
Directed by Nelson Shin, The Transformers: The Movie was originally released in 1986 and runs approximately 85 minutes. The animated production expanded the conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons while introducing new characters and moving the story into a more ambitious science-fiction setting.
Set years after the events of the original television series, the film follows the Autobots as they confront both the Decepticons and Unicron, an enormous planet-consuming Transformer.
Its story dramatically changed the franchise’s original character lineup. Alongside the death of Optimus Prime, the movie introduced figures such as Hot Rod, Ultra Magnus, Kup, Arcee and Galvatron, many of whom became major parts of later Transformers projects.
The film’s darker tone distinguished it from the television episodes that surrounded it. Battles had more permanent consequences, familiar characters disappeared and the threat posed by Unicron gave the story a scale that the weekly series rarely attempted.
The Soundtrack Is Also Part of the Anniversary
The anniversary campaign extends beyond the theatrical return.
An updated version of the movie’s soundtrack, titled The Transformers: The Movie – The Soundtrack: The Reformatted Edition, is already available through music services and on vinyl. It includes a new recording of “Nothing’s Gonna Stand in Our Way” featuring Sebastian Bach.
Hasbro has also introduced anniversary merchandise inspired by the film, including new Studio Series figures and an electronic replica of the Matrix of Leadership.
These releases position the screenings as the centerpiece of a broader celebration rather than an isolated cinema rerelease.
Details About the New Chapter Remain Secret
The most important unanswered questions concern the post-credits material.
Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment have not announced:

- Its voice cast and production staff
- Where it occurs in the franchise timeline
